I live with lots of red maples around the house and gardens, and find that only the surface or near-surface ones germinate. I would be more likely to just use mulch as I prefer not to use Preen in my garden. I think Carolyn's original idea of Preen and mulch is probably better. However this year maple seedlings seem especially abundant and the high numbers may be due to a heavy seed production (masting) event last fall. Sodium will inhibit root growth as well as seed germination, though there are salt-tolerant plants. It's not unusual to see tree seedlings, especially from maple trees, sprouting up in lawns in spring. Purchase trees from a local nursery and plant from spring to. The best solution is to mow them, and keep them mowed. Baking soda has sodium in it and will increase the salt levels in soils, both short term, but also long term in areas without enough rain or irrigation to flush the salts out of the soil. Maples are generally hardy throughout New England, but some hybrids may vary in their hardiness. I'm not planning on using baking soda for weed seed germination inhibition, regardless. However, its still crucial to check soil moisture during a drought and provide supplemental water if necessary. Baking soda has a pH of 8.3 and so will raise the pH, making the soil more alkaline. Just wanted to correct something from Debi's post above.
